The successful presidential election in the Gambia has been described as good news and a boost for West Africa’s image.
The Liberian President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said this in Abuja during her two-day official visit.
“Once again, democracy has prevailed; we applaud it, endorse it and we just hope that The Gambia can continue along this development path,’’ President Sirleaf who is also the Chairperson, Authority of Heads of State and Government stated.
The opposition leader in Gambia, Adama Barrow, won the election which took place on December1, ending the 22 year rule of President Yahya Jammeh.
Terrorism in West Africa
The Liberian President also commended efforts made to curb terrorism in West Africa, saying “information sharing among member states has contributed immensely in boosting peace and security.’’
President Sirleaf said that her visit to the ECOWAS institutions in Abuja, Nigeria was aimed at familiarising herself with the structure, operations and staffing of the institutions.
The institutions she visited while in Nigeria included the ECOWAS Commission, the ECOWAS Parliament and the Community Court of Justice.
