The Nigerian government says it spends over 10 billion Naira to feed prisoners.
The Minister for Interior, Abdurahman Dambazau disclosed this in the ongoing town hall meeting holding in Kaduna, Northwest Nigeria.
“There are about 70 inmates spread across the country with over 70 percent awaiting trial,” he explained.
The Minister explained that the Institution needs restructuring and reintegrating as over 400 prison assets are not properly utilized.
Speaking on the border control, he said there are a lot of illegal activities happening at the boarder which includes smuggling of arms and drugs into the country.
“Biometrics has been introduced in all entry points into the country to address the challenge of illegal activities at the border,” the Minister stated.
Dambazau noted that though achievement has been recorded in the fight against insurgency in the Northeast region, the Ministry is intensifying its effort to restore peace in the region by protecting citizens using International standards.
