Protect rights of Nigerians with Down syndrome – Scientist

Mr. Chineye Nwekpe, a Laboratory Scientist at the Orthopedic Hospital, Enugu, has called for the protection of the right and well being of Nigerians living with Down Syndrome.

Nwekpe, a former Chairman of Association of Nigeria Medical Laboratory Scientists, made the call in Enugu.

He urged government at all levels to raise public awareness for the inclusion of Nigerians with Down syndrome in the society, adding that their rights should be protected as every other human being.“I strongly believe that if the right and well being of people with Down syndrome are protected and cared for, it will spur then to achieve what they want in life,” he said.

Nwekpe urged parents, care-givers and communities to show love to anyone around them living with Down syndrome.“My advice for parents or guardians who have Down syndrome children is that they should always show love and give them adequate care. Showing love to them will enable them live their lives and attain their goals in life.

People should not look down on them or ostracise them because they are also created by the God Almighty,” he added

He said that approximately one in 800 live births is affected with Down syndrome.
