Rangers International of Enugu has climbed to the summit of the Nigeria Professional Football League after defeating Abia Warriors 2 – 1 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enuguon Friday night.
The match, witnessed by about 19,000 fans lived up to its pre-match hype as both teams gave good account of themselves.
The Enugu side coached by Imama Amapakabo started the brightest and went ahead through Chima Ulucha in the 15th minute following a good pass by Obinna Nwobodo.
Rangers added a second goal just 10 minutes before halftime from the penalty spot converted by Chisom Egbuchulam and Rangers could have added a third just before half time when Bobby Clements’s weak effort came off the woodwork.
In the second half, Rangers brought on Ocheme Edoh in the second half to boost their attack, but Abia had the best chances in the opening minutes of the second half missing two chances in quick succession.
With five minutes left of the game, Bolaji Sakin came close to getting a goal for Abia Warriors but goalkeeper Bonsu was up to the task
And the Abia side got rewarded for their efforts when Olaha put the ball through Bonsu’s legs to provide a tense end to the encounter which Rangers held on till the end.
