Residents of a Pretoria West community have clashed with police during a violent protest that resulted in the blocking of roads and burning of public property on Thursday.
The protesters from the informal settlement called Gomora numbering about a 1000 were dispersed by riot police who fired tear gas, rubber bullets and stun grenades to control the crowd.
The protesters are “reported to have attacked the police, security services and journalists with stones.”
They also blocked roads and burned tyres and other public buildings including a learning centre of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in the province.
Two people were reported to have been arrested after torching a truck.
The reason for the protest is unclear but local media say the residents are demanding for better services in their community.
