Nigeria Premiere League club, Rivers United has commenced preparation to take 2017 CAF Champions League by storm.
Rivers United qualified for the 2017 edition of Africa’s Premier club competition after they finished second in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) in the just concluded football season.
Rivers United finished as runners up in the NPFL with 60 points from 36 matches.
Defender, Sope Hameed said Rivers United must now look to impress on the continent just as Enyimba have done.
“No one has heard about Rivers United on the continent but a few years ago, that was the case with (two-time African champions) Enyimba”.
“With hard work, focus and early determination, we can achieve what Enyimba did some years ago in the CAF Champions League.
“A lot of people felt we would be relegated when the season started but we knew what we were about and kept our eyes on the prize.”
Meanwhile, four-time Nigeria champions Kano Pillars have congratulated Rivers United FC for their qualification to next year’s CAF Champions League.
Spokesman of Kano Pillars, Idris Malikawa, who sent the message on behalf of ‘Sai Masu Gida’, said Rivers United surprised many with their doggedness and consistency which culminated in them securing of one of two Champions League tickets to represent Nigeria on the continent in 2017.
He added that the club must be resourceful in their preparations if they want to attain desired heights next season.
“On behalf of Kano Pillars, I want to say a big congratulations to Rivers United FC for their impressive run in the just-concluded Nigeria Professional Football League,” said Malikawa.
“Their ability to secure a CAF Champions League ticket against the odds shows that they are a club with serious-minded footballers and officials.
“Kano Pillars Football Club wish Rivers United all the best as she embarks on her first journey in the CAF Champions League.
“To succeed in that competition requires a lot of resourcefulness and early preparation because they will be facing highly-professional sides who are the best in their respective countries.”
Pillars reached the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League in 2009.
