Security agencies urge Nigerians to be vigilant at Sallah

Security agencies have urged Nigerians to remain vigilant during the Ed-el-fitr celebrations following a security alert about some extremists plan to attack some States including Edo State during the celebration.

The Nigerian Police Force and the Department of State Services, SSS gave the warning at a joint Press briefing in Abuja.

“Credible intelligence availed the agencies indicate plans by insurgent or extremist elements to attack vulnerable communities and soft targets with high population during the forthcoming Sallah celebrations between 12th and 13th September, 2016. Edo State is amongst the States being earmarked for these planned attacks,”the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Don Awunah said.

Call for Edo election postponement
Mr. Awunah appealed to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to postpone the upcoming election in Edo State to enable them handle the matter effectively.

“While election is important, the security agencies cannot allow the peace of the country to be disrupted and we will continue to remain vigilant and ensure consolidation of the successes gained in the current counter insurgency fight. It is in this regard that we are appealing to INEC which has the legal duty to regulate elections, to consider the need for possible postponement of the date of the election in Edo State for the security agencies to deal decisively with the envisaged terrorist threats,” he explained.

Mr. ¬†Awunah assured Nigerians of their commitment to ensuring maximum protection of people’s lives and properties.

The DSS was represented by Mr. Garba Abdullah while the Nigerian Police Force was represented by its Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Don Awunah.
