Patriotism and selfless service are key ingredients to develop a country aspiring to be an important player in global affairs.
Therefore, individuals who have devoted their lives to the service of their country towards achieving this goal should be honoured during their life time and after their demise.
These were the words of Nigeria’s Minister for Information and Culture Lai Mohammed when he paid a condolence visit to the family of the former governor of the then western States in Nigeria, General Adeyinka Adebayo.
The Minister extolled the virtues of the late governor, describing him as a detribalised Nigerian committed to the unity of the nation.
“These were people, these were Nigerians who had just one passion- to keep Nigeria one when it mattered most.”
Nigerians, the minister observed, must learn from the exemplary life of individuals like the late general Adebayo.
“What we need to learn is that Nigeria is too delicate a place and we must understand the various sensibilities of the various people because we are a country of many nations. Having said that, anybody entrusted with the mantle of leadership must look at Nigeria from that perspective, must be very understanding, very accommodating and that is one thing you can say about the late General.”
The late General Adeyinka Adebayo, who was the governor of the defunct western states of Nigeria, died about two weeks ago in Lagos.
