SGF urges South East Leaders to call Biafra separatist to order

Cyril Okonkwo, Enugu

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Barbachir David Lawal,  has urged leaders in the south east of Nigeria to call agitators for the independence of Biafra to order.

Lawal made the call in Abakaliki, during a one-day working visit to Ebonyi State.

He said that the activities of such groups as the Movement for Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, and the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, was a threat to peace and should not be allowed to continue.

He said the groups were misguided youths who have been causing crisis in the country to create impression that Nigeria is not one, and asked leaders in the zone to ensure that the youth are meaningfully engaged  to take their minds off acts that could threaten peace in Nigeria.

He said ‘’some misguided youths in the south east zone are causing crisis in the country and I charge all Igbo leaders to rise to the occasion and call these misguided youths to order.”

Shun corruption

The SGF called on governors of the 36 states of the federation and political office holders to shun acts of corruption and provide enduring democracy dividends to their people.

He identified corruption as one of the major factors inhibiting good governance and development of the nation, explaining that the achievements recorded by Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi state was borne out of judicious management of the state’s funds.

He further charged politicians not to perceive their offices from the point of politics but on the bases of performance and credibility.

“I am impressed at the level of work done by Governor David Umahi especially in the area of flyovers construction; he has set a standard for the federal government considering the financial figures expended for the project. It is now obvious that we can do much if we remove the weeds that cause corruption. What is important is the money in the state but the the heart of the man doing the job,” he said.

He commended the people of Ebonyi State for choosing a man like Umahi and expressed surprise that a governor elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, could make such a remarkable achievement in short time.

Responding, Governor David Umahi thanked the SGF for his visit, stating that he was able to make the achievements through the guidance of God.

He explained that the drive of his administration was to ensure improved welfare of Ebonyi and rapid development of the state

The SGF, who commissioned Governor Sam Egwu Governor’s Lodge and the Central Bank Road within the Centenary City, also inspected the ongoing construction of 3 flyovers, internal roads, street lights among others.
