Solar farms to bridge energy challenges

A Solar Energy Expert, Mr Yemi Kolawale has urged the Federal Government to encourage the establishment of solar farms in various parts of the country to enhance power supply.

Kolawale, the Chief Executive Officer, Topian Energy Solution Limited, Lagos in an interview, said that such farms could be established in industrial areas.

He spoke against the backdrop of the Federal Government’s plan to provide about one million rural houses, which could not be connected to the national grid with renewable energy supply.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo had earlier made the disclosure at a renewable energy roundtable conference organised by the Ministry of Science and Technology in collaboration with the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) in Abuja.

Kolawale said more solar farms could be encouraged by providing tax rebate and special loan at single-digit interest rate to the farmers.

These incentives will encourage the producers to see Nigeria as an investment heaven for business.”

“The establishment of solar is expensive hence the needs to sight such farms in industrial areas to enable the investors get returns on their investment in not too distant time.“The government could also partner with countries that have solved their energy difficulties through renewable energy, such as Germany to boost Nigeria’s economy.’’

According to Kolawole, the project can be built in phases to pave way for other projects.

He said that the German Government had managed solar energy successfully to the extent of producing one Gigabyte through solar farms.
