Students get scholarships in Lagos

President of the Club, Lanre Rasak addressing the audience.

No fewer than 1,300 students in Epe, Lagos State have so far benefitted from various scholarship awards in the last 42 years, courtesy of the Epe Club.

President of the Club, Lanre Rasak gave the hint at the 2016 Presidential Ileya get-together that also witnessed the investiture of the Lagos State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode as the Life Patron of the indigenous body.

Rasak said that since 1974 when the club came into existence, the scholarship idea was conceived to address the educational deficit the Epe division of Lagos was experiencing at the time.

He hinted that the scholarship had been channelled towards tertiary education of the beneficiaries, noting that the gesture will continue while the number would be increased from time to time.

“We started with 20, we are hoping to increase the number to50, 60 and so on annually,” he stated.

Razac stressed that unlike some indigenous organisations being used to fan embers of ethnicity, the club had enhanced the educational status of the Epe division and fostered unity among the descendants.

“Epe division before now had the problem of ethnic nationality between the Eko-Epe and the Ijebu-Epe, so we thought of a platform to unify all the nationalities, where we could exhibit genuine love towards one another and discuss common issues that affect us, this led to the existence of the club.”

“Since then, we have embarked on initiatives to develop both the physical and human capacity of the people, while we often engage the government on the needed developmental projects that will have direct bearing on the lives of our people,” the President stated.

Ambode’s investiture
On the decoration of Governor Ambode as Life Patron, the President of the Club maintained that the governor had been embarking on uncommon developmental projects that touched the core of the people’s existence.

“With what we are seeing in the State, he has shown that he is a fair-minded person, he is not a governor of a particular area of Lagos State, we are really proud of him in Epe and there is no better time than now for him to be decorated as the Patron of this club,” Rasak added.

Meanwhile, sons and daughters of the town trooped to the Club House in Papa-Epe to celebrate the 2016 Presidential Ileya Party as the juju music maestro- King Sunny Ade thrilled the audience all through the night.
