The Super Eagles of Nigeria will on Tuesday know if they will remain in Pot 2 or drop to Pot 3 when FIFA unveil the new special ranking for Africa ahead of Friday’s final round draw for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Nigeria were seeded in Pot 2 when FIFA released the seeding last week based on a special edition of the FIFA World Rankings released on 8 June 2016 to allow the inclusion of the results of the Africa Cup of Nations qualification games played between 3–5 June 2016.
But following the protest by the Egyptian Football Federation who queried the world governing body for the sport on criteria used for the ranking FIFA have now decided on the establishment of a new special ranking.
The issue arose regarding the matter after Egypt had dropped two places in the special June ranking for African countries, to the seventh spot and Pot 2 in the African World Cup qualifiers, despite being ranked fifth in Africa in the months of May, June and even July.
With the new special ranking, Nigeria may drop from Pot 2 to Pot 3 which means they stand the chance of having two heavyweights in African football in the group when the draw is held in Cairo on Friday.
