The election of the Rivers State governor Nyesom Wike has been upheld by the country’s Supreme Court, in a judgement delivered on Wednesday evening.
In an unanimous judgment, the court restored Wike’s mandate and pronounced him winner of the election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
Justice Kekere-Ekun delivered the lead verdict.
The court believed that the three separate appeals filed by Wike, PDP and INEC, were meritorious.
The previous judgments delivered by the Rivers State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal and the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal were both set aside by the Supreme Court.
The panel headed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed however reserved their reasons for the judgement till February 12.
Governor Wike was congratulated by his party, the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP.
FLASH: Governor Wike wins at Supreme Court. Congratulations to the good people of Rivers State.
