Surgical operations for patients suffering from Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) have begun at the Sobi Specialist Hospital, Alagbado in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, North Central Nigeria.
Three specialists , Professor Muneer Ijaiya of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH) , Dr Saheed Idris from Zamfara and Dr Halimat Bello from General Hospital Kwali , in Abuja are carrying out the operations .
Already, sixteen patients of VVF are on admission for the surgery while fourteen are expected to make up the thirty already captured for the surgery.
A Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at the hospital, Dr Bolanle Shukura Okesina told VON Correspondent, that the surgery is going on smoothly and would continue to the end of the week .
Dr Okesina described the surgery as n appealed to those suffering from the diseases to come and benefit from it.
VVF is an abnormal opening between the urinary system and the vagina which usually occur after a prolonged Labour not attended to by skilled personnel.
She cautioned against staying long at home while in labor before delivery and she urged that such cases should be urgently referred to the hospital.
The Fistula Desk Officer, Kwara State Ministry of Health, Dr Stephen Arigidi disclosed that the free service was organized by the Kwara State Government in conjunction with the USAID Fistula Care Plus Project.
The expert added that the hospital and a team of surgeons from Engender Health Fistula Care Plus Project have been mobilzed to carry out the repairs.
Dr Arigidi also explained that the condition has caused rejection for many women in various communities, saying that women with fistula could leave normal lives after repairs.
