There is hope in the fight against corruption in Nigeria – DG VON

Aliyu Othman, Abuja

The fight against corruption by President Muhammadu Buhari’s government has raised the hope of Nigerians for a better future.

The Ag Director General of Voice of Nigeria, Mr. Ahaziah Suleiman said at the inauguration of the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit of VON in Abuja that “until now we never knew the quantum of stealing that was going on in government circles, Baba Buhari Sir, go on, we are solidly behind you”

He said what the EFCC, ICPC and Code of Conduct Tribunal are doing on the fight against corruption showed that with the required political will Nigeria would get rid of the monster called Corruption.

“Nigerians should learn to boo and not to hail corrupt officials when they display their ill gotten wealth”

The Ag Director General called on the 10 new members of the ACTU VON to help in dictating corrupt practices not only for the ICPC but also Voice of Nigeria to ensure the elimination of corrupt tendencies.

“My appeal to the VON Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit is to help not only ICPC but the Management of Voice of Nigeria in eliminating corrupt practices wherever it is found”
Mr. Ahaziah also urged the anti corruption agencies to go beyond checking bank accounts by taking inventory of properties of corrupt leaders spread across Nigeria.

He stressed that “since there are laws preventing laundering of money, the ‘’thieves’’ now use such funds to buy houses in high brow areas of cities like Abuja, Lagos, Port-Harcourt and Kano among others to hide their ill gotten wealth”

The Ag Director General called on the Nigerian government to confiscate such houses that were unoccupied and in some cases owners not known and convert them to government property.

The Chairman Independent Corrupt Practices and other related offenses Commission ICPC, Mr. Ekpo Nta said the duties of the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit included undertaking system study and review of corruption-prone processes and procedures with a view to instituting better practices in Nigeria.

Mr Nta challenged the new ACTU leadership in Voice of Nigeria to aim at achieving total success in the assignment by making VON and Nigeria a better place for all.
