The United States Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights, Ms Sarah Sewall has visited Nigeria’s north east region and met with other interest groups in the country.
Ms Sewall while on a four-day visit to Maiduguri and Abuja, commended the Nigerian military for its multiple successes in the campaign against boko haram.
She also noted the difficulties inherent in securing and stabilizing the areas retaken from the insurgents.
Sewall also cited the urgent need to restore governance and services in the affected areas which would enable displaced persons to safely return to their homes.
In one of her meetings in Abuja, the U.S Under Secretary met with leaders from the Niger Delta Region.
She expressed hope that their dialogue with the Nigerian government would be productive, adding that dialogues were crucial to finding a lasting, peaceful solution.
Ms Sewall also held discussions with interfaith religious leaders who represented a range of faith communities.
