The 9th edition of the Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, launched since 2015, has been hailed by Ugandans on social media in 2017 for one word – boda boda.
The local word used widely in East Africa represents the popular motorcycle taxis used in almost every part of Uganda.
The dictionary defines boda boda – which is one of the 900 newly introduced words – as “a type of motorcycle or bicycle with a space for a passenger or for carrying goods, often used as a taxi”.
It further added a local example: “boys on boda bodas riding on Kampala’s streets”.
These appealed to Ugandans who tweeted the portion in the printed edition that showed the word and its definition.
