The Vice Chancellor of Al-Hikmah University, Ilorin, Professor Taofeeq Olalekan-Ibrahim, has called on the Nigerian government to support local farmers for increase agricultural production.
Professor Olalekan-Ibrahim made the appeal at the University Senate Chamber, while fielding questions from journalists in preparation for the sixth Convocation ceremony of the Institution.
‘‘For the country to overcome the current economy recession, healthy an substantive incentives must be provided for local farmers to enable them embark on mechanized farming.’’
The Vice Chancellor pointed out that the Nigeria is blessed with the both human and natural resources, especially arable lands that can grow different crops, stressing the need to revitalize the agricultural sector to stimulate the economy.
Professor Olalekan-Ibrahim emphasized that, ‘‘it is time for the country to start producing raw materials for industrial use and stop over reliance on mono economy and foreign products.’’
While addressing the issue of clashes between Fulani herdsmen and farmers, the University Don called for appropriate education, dialogue and active policing to avert the crisis and forestall any future recurrence of the clashes.
He urged Nigerians to live harmoniously, accommodate one another and brainstorm with the government to bring out lasting solution to the conflict.
