Nigerians have been urged to support and give constructive advice to the government in addressing the current challenges facing the country.
Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who gave the advice in Abuja in interview with newsmen ahead of Nigeria Prays 20th anniversary, expressed optimism in the government’s ability to solve the numerous challenges bedeviling the nation.
General Gowon (rtd), explained that the problems faced by the country had lingered over the years, which has further been worsened by the drop in oil revenue, which is the mainstay of the country’s economy.
“We pray for better solutions to the problem, we pray that the government will be looking at ways and means to deal with this problem of recession, which I know they are doing and they are cracking their heads”, he emphasised.
“Nigerians are bombarding them with various suggestions on how this can be resolved, usually any government when you have problems like that you depend on number of your advisers who are expert on this field, both within the government and also from outside the government in order to deal with that particular problem,” General Gowon explained.
General Gowon disclosed that he had a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, where President Buhari expressed his commitment to do whatever he could to find lasting solution to the problem.
“I can assure it is not easy I can tell you from personal experience, these things are not achieved over night, and a lot of Nigeria expects it to be solved within a day or two.”
General Gowon attributed the recession in the country to fall in oil price, lack of required industries and business establishments, which were not established in the past, that could have made up for the short fall in oil revenue.
“I know every effort is being done to deal with this particular problem, and so let us give the Federal government that time to make sure we keep reminding them that there is problem and they got to do whatever they can to solve it, and let us cooperate by helping ensuring that government hears the concerns and do something about it.”
“Criticize, criticize constructively just don’t condemn out rightly”, General Gowon emphasised.
On the arrest of some Judges in the country, General Gowon, appealed to the government to ensure that it operates within the confines of the law.
The Nigeria Prays, which was convened by General Gowon in 1996, will be commemorating its twentieth anniversary with a national thanks giving and prayer service for the nation on Saturday 15th October, 2016.
