Box Office: ‘Free Guy’ breaks out with $28.4 million


Disney’s “Free Guy” broke free of expectations on and off the screen as it grossed $28.4 million, beating projections by more than 40 percent.

It was one of three new wide releases alongside “Don’t Breathe 2” which earned $10.6 million and “Respect”, $8.8 million and was the only one to stand out.

“Free Guy” cost more than $100 million, marketing not included. Foreign markets added $23 million this weekend, for $51 million worldwide. The film exceeded expectations, but profitability isn’t assured. Even so, Reynolds tweeted Sunday that Disney already wants a sequel.

The response to the Ryan Reynold’s comedy suggests how different audiences respond to the Delta variant and provides key insight about what audiences want.

Free Guy is a 2021 American sci-fi comedy film directed by Shawn Levy. The film stars Ryan Reynolds (who also co-produced) as a bank teller who discovers he is actually a non-player character in an open-world video game and decides to become the hero of the story and save his friends from deletion by the game’s creator. Other stars include Jodie Comer, Lil Rey, Joe Keery. The movie was released on the 13th of August 2021 and have received an enormous amount of positive reviews.
