The Benue State Governorship Primary elections of the All Progressive Congress, APC, in North Central Nigeria have commenced across the 23 Local Government Areas in the state.
Chairman of the Electoral Panel for the election, Dr. Peter Ojie, briefed newsmen on the processes involved in the exercise at the party’s secretariat in Makurdi, the State Capital.
Dr. Ojie stated that the election was being conducted using the direct primary method as approved by the party’s leadership.
Recalled that the state had earlier adopted the Direct method of conducting its governorship primary election and the party’s national executive council reaffirmed it under the amended electoral Act 2022.
The Panel Chairman stated that the materials for the primary election arrived in the state late yesterday, May 26, due to unavoidable circumstances from the national body. He apologised for any inconvenience the delay may cause the parties involved.
He said the voting was through option A4, where registered party members are expected to cast their votes.
Meanwhile, the collation of results from the various local governments had begun at about 2 pm at the party’s secretariat, with an extraordinary Congress scheduled at Aper Aku stadium to announce the final winner.
He denied any notice of court injunction against the exercise, as speculated in some sections of the media, and promised free, fair, and transparent primaries.
The panel had earlier met with relevant stakeholders of the party in the state, including governorship aspirants on the party’s platform.
