2023 Census: Commission commences post-enumeration survey

The National Population Commission in Nigeria has commenced the trial Post Enumeration Survey, PES, ahead of the April 2023 Population and Housing Census in Nigeria.

The survey will be conducted from the 18th to 29th of October 2022 in 127 enumeration areas in one Local Government Area in a State in each of the six geo-political zones across the country.

The Chairman of the Commission Mr Nasir Kwarra said the “Post Enumeration Survey, PES, is a statistically representative survey that the National Population Commission will use to check the accuracy of the Trial Census conducted in July 2022.

“PES will allow the commission to determine how many people were missed, included by mistake, or counted in the wrong place.”

The Chairman also said that the conduct of the “Trial PES is an integral part of the preparatory activities for the conduct of a successful census in 2023.

The Commission is placing premium importance on this exercise

“Population census is the official enumeration of all persons in a country at a specific time and that it encompasses the collection, compilation, evaluation, analysis, publication and dissemination of demographic, social and economic statistics relating to the population”.

He explained that the PES has been designed to redress possible errors in the census process adding that the results of the comparison are mainly used to measure coverage and content error in the context of the census.

This Trial PES exercise is in line with the United Nations Principles and Recommendations for Population and Housing Censuses which gives credibility to the census results and engenders confidence and acceptability of the census by data users.

He commended the Commission Press Corps for the robust and professional manner they have consistently covered the activities of the Commission and disseminated information and educated the general public, especially on the 2023 Population and Housing Census.
