Nigerians have been advised to ensure they choose a personality with a proven track record to lead the nation for another term.
The Vicar General, Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos, Reverend John Aniagwu gave the advice as Nigeria’s general election approaches and political parties prepare for electoral campaigns.
He was speaking at an event to mark the 50th Anniversary of St Leo’s Catholic Church in Ikeja, Lagos
Speaking on the state of the Nation, Aniagwu explained that it was important for Nigerians to practically involved in the political process that would usher in a new lease of life for them.
He stressed the need for everyone to make judicious use of their permanent voter cards to choose a rightful candidates in the next election.
He said leadership positions cannot be left alone to the politicians who have been found wanting in numerous acts that keep dragging the nation backwards.
“Christians should involve in Nigeria’s politics and ensure we do our best and make sure the right person takes over the leadership of our nation. Christians must be part of the political arrangement and still remain Christians and not join the crowd when they are there. If you want to change the situation of things you must get involved. No church can say support this person or not, the church will only ask you to look at whether the person is willing to right the wrongs in all the sectors and look at how our lives can be better of if elected.” he said.
The Parish Priest who was represented by an Associate Priest, Reverend Emmanuel Omoroke maintained that citizens should not be engulfed by any fear that would prevent them from casting thier ballots which invariably would determine thier future.
Security challenges
Speaking on the current security situation in the country, he stressed that it has become imperative for everyone to be security conscious while supporting the security agents to arrest the situation.
According to him “There is no one that is not aware about the security situation which has deteriorated to a large extent and we all know that government is trying on its part to improve the security architecture of the country, except everyone expect them to do more in that area in other to restore peace across the country. Apart from what the government is doing each locality must also ensure it protect its locality to fight insurgency. No doubt, it is apparent they are winning the war against the insurgents and what they need now is to up their game.”
He however urged everyone to pray fervently for the country for it to scale the hurdles of political whirlwind and summount the insecurity challenges it’s currently facing.
50th celebration
The Chairman Planning Committee of the 50th Anniversary of the Church, Mr. Taiwo Obileye said that about 6,000 participants are expected to attend the event which will last for over a week as adequate security measures have been put in place to ensure a hitch free event.
Obileye noted that there are copious spiritual and social services that would be rendered to the parish community during the celebration which are targeted at children, Youths, sick and home-bound parishioners.
He also added that tthere would also be a special requiem Mass for all deceased members of the parish since inception as well as Sports and games among others.
