The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, has urged political parties to select females as running mates of the gubernatorial flag bearers.

The Chairperson of NAWOJ Cross River State in south-south Nigeria, Mrs. Umo Basi-Edet, said that for fairness, justice, and equity to thrive, they should select women as running mates across all the parties within the state.

In a press release signed by NAWOJ secretary, Mrs. Maria Ewa, the association noted that adopting such a strategy would enhance women’s voices on political matters.

According to NAWOJ, “we should emphasise the need for gender sensitivity across all political offices to promote equality in the nation’s polity, especially as the 2023 general elections draw near.

“Our clamour for 35 percent affirmative action would increase women’s participation in active politics.

“We commend the different political parties in the state for the peaceful conduct of primaries and appeal for women to be considered for the positions of deputy governors and vice president of our beloved country Nigeria,” NAWOJ stated.

PVC collection

NAWOJ also used the opportunity to appeal to women in Cross River State to take advantage of the soon-to-be-concluded voter registration exercise and collect their Permanent Voters Cards from INEC’s (Independent National Electoral Commission) designated centres.

The association noted that “failure for women and eligible young people to collect their voter’s cards would translate to being disenfranchised.

“So your PVC is essential for you not to disenfranchise yourselves and contribute to electing credible leaders at the forthcoming general election.

“We commend religious and traditional leaders for lending their voice to the campaign to enhance PVC registration and collection.

“We hope our leaders will continue to support women to take part in national development,” the association added.
