A group, the Yoruba Appraisal Forum, YAF has appealed to the Nigerian government to tighten security in the Southwest region of the country as election campaign begins.

The group’s National Coordinator, Adesina Animashaun made the appeal at a press conference in Lagos state.

Mr. Animashaun also called on security agencies to be on alert and seize all unregistered arms from individuals wielding them in Southwestern states of the country.

He alleged that a group known as the Yoruba Nation Agitators are making plans to stop Nigeria’s 2023 elections from holding and have armed thugs and young people with weapons to achieve this aim.

It has come to YAF’s notice recently that some so-called Yoruba Nation champions and agitators as well as disgruntled politicians, working in cahoots with their allies in other parts of the country, have been planning violent and unpatriotic activities in the South-West with the ultimate ulterior motive of truncating the forthcoming 2023 general elections.

“Recently, a group of Yoruba Nation agitators carried out a rally in Agege, Lagos… That was a dress rehearsal of their plans to truncate the 2023 general elections, employing violence and chaos.

The Forum enjoined Nigerians and the people of the Southwest in particular to resist the plans of any individual or group trying truncate democracy and destabilise Nigeria through violence.

The Forum also advised Yoruba and Nigerian youths to maintain peace and eschew violence, urging the people of the South-West and Nigerians not to allow themselves to be deceived by anyone into engaging in violence.
