On Tuesday, a former governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnamani, retained the senatorial ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to contest the Enugu East senatorial seat in the 2023 general elections.
Nnamani, who currently represents the district in the Senate, had to beat four other contestants, including a former Chief of Staff in Enugu state, Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo.
Nnamani won a landslide as he polled 243 votes cast by the delegates at the primary election held at Agbani.
While Mrs. Nwobodo was absent from the primary, another contestant, Joshua Mba, stepped down under the guise that he would not contest the election with Nnamani, who he said was the leader of Nkanu land.
The returning officer in the primary, Chinedu Onu, adjudged the exercise “free and transparent.”
Meanwhile, a fierce contest was ongoing in Enugu West Senatorial District as aspirants ran neck to neck in the exercise holding at Awgu.
According to the returning officer, the election results were still expected as of the time of filing this report.
