The Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, House of Representatives Umar El-Yakub has expressed optimism that the 2023 general elections will be credible and acceptable to all Nigerians.
El-Yakub who expressed confidence, while speaking with the House of Representatives press corps in Abuja, noted that the signing of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law had prepared ground for smooth conduct of the election.
He explained that the recently signed Electoral Act substantially addresses the issues that have plagued the country’s electoral process in terms of transparency, credibility, and strengthened the capacity of the electoral umpire to perform its mandate of giving Nigerians credible elections.
“I will like to thank President Buhari for passing very critical historic bills like the PIB (Petroleum Industry Bill), the Electoral Amendment Act, the Climate Change bill, CAMA (Company Allied Matters) bill, the Deep Offshore bill, and others. All these bills will bring about lifetime achievements to the Nigerian people.” El-Yakub added.
He added that the cordial relationship between the executive and the legislature has led to good governance and the delivery of services to Nigerians.
El-Yakub revealed that the administration of Buhari had found a dependable partner in the 9th National Assembly, stressing that the House of Representatives has been handy in ensuring critical legislations.
“I commend the Speaker of the 9th House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila for passing into law the constitution. I commend NASS for the singular commitment of passing both executive and private bills promptly. The reversal of the budget calendar from January to December circle is certainly something to commend the National Assembly for.
“I commend the Speaker for going a long way in deepening democratic processes. The National Assembly has been consistent with the policies of the government. Take, for instance, the Finance bill, the Mid Term Expenditure Framework and other critical legislations that have been passed”.
“We commend the National Assembly for giving INEC (Independent Electoral Commission) the necessary tool to organize a credible election because the framework has been improved.” He added.
