The Labour Party in Nigeria says Dr Doyin Okupe remains the Director General of the Presidential Campaign Council of the party ahead of the 2023 general election in the country.
The Director General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Dr. Doyin Okupe, and 10 other members of the party who were from Ogun state, Southwest Nigeria were said to be suspended by the leadership of the Ogun State chapter of the party on alleged “non-financial membership status, political rascality, and misappropriation of funds.”
The affected members were Deputy State Chairman, Jagun Lookman; State Women Leader, Oluwabukola Soyoye; former-state Treasurer, Gbadebo Fesomade; State Publicity Secretary, Jide Amusan; State Youth Leader, Abdulmalik Olaleye; Assistant State Youth Leader, Adeshina Shojobi; Senatorial Women Leader Ogun East, Deborah Adewale; Assistant State Secretary, Olatunde Abolade; Abel Olaleye; and Abayomi Collins.
The National Secretary of the party Mr. Umar-Farouk Ibrahim told journalists that the National Working Committee had an emergency meeting where they discussed the suspension of Dr. Okukpe by the Ogun State Chapter of the party as nulled, void, and unconstitutional.
Dr. Ibrahim also said that a committee has been set up to investigate and reconcile aggrieved members of the party and that “The Ogun state chapter of the party has acted outside its constitutional Jurisdiction.”
He further said that the party has an internal conflict resolution mechanism for handling issues such as those enshrined in the party’s Constitution.
He reiterated that the party’s national leadership will do everything within its constitutional powers to ensure that “our cohesion is not tempered with and will not be distracted by the antics of the opposition as our candidates are already cruising to victory.”
Attacks on Labour Party
Going by the recent attacks on the Labour Party’s members in Edo, Ebonyi, and Kaduna States respectively; the National Secretary of the Labour Party called on the security agencies to improve the state of security in the country.
Dr Umar-Farouk Ibrahim also said that the killers of the party’s women leader in Kaura Local Government of Kaduna State, Mrs Victoria Chimtex should be arrested and brought to justice.
He further called on “the governors of the states to restrain their thugs” and that the security agencies should be “more vigilant while carrying out their constitutional responsibility in protecting lives and properties of the citizens,”
He commended the office of the National Security Adviser for working to improve the security of the country.
