The United Nations has urged Nigeria to set a pace for peaceful and fair elections in Africa with the 2023 General Election.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) of the United Nations and Head of the UN Office for West and Sahel, Mr. Mahamat Saleh Annadif made the call when he visited the National Leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the Party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.

Promising the support of the UN for the 2023 elections, Mr. Annadif noted that the APC has an important role to play for the success of the elections because it is the party in power.

He stated that the events occurring in Nigeria affect the whole region hence the need for peaceful elections.

Annadif said; “As I like to say, when Nigeria sneezes, the entire region catches cold. So we like and hope that Nigeria stays in good health and be the locomotive for other regions and this is why we will expect the APC to support peaceful elections.”

He stressed that they would be meeting with all the key stakeholders and officials.

The APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu represented by the Party’s Deputy National Chairman (North), Abubakar Kyari pledged the party’s commitment to peaceful elections.

Adamu also called on the UN and other international bodies to support Nigeria in rebuilding Borno State which was destroyed by terrorist.

He said; “The Party calls for a concerted effort on the part of the UN and the rest of the international community to support the process of peace-building and reconstruction in Borno State and other parts of Nigeria that have been adversely affected by insurgency and other forms of unrest and insecurity.”
