The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has confirmed that 2025 was among the three warmest years ever recorded, continuing a sustained trend of rising global temperatures driven by climate change.

In a consolidated analysis of eight global temperature datasets, WMO reported that the global average surface temperature in 2025 was about 1.44°C above pre-industrial levels (1850–1900), despite the cooling influence of La Niña conditions at the beginning and end of the year.

The past 11 years, from 2015 to 2025, have now been confirmed as the 11 warmest years on record, with 2023–2025 ranking as the three hottest consecutive years across all datasets.

WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo noted that the continued rise in temperatures reflects the long-term accumulation of heat-trapping greenhouse gases, adding that elevated land and ocean temperatures contributed to extreme weather events such as heatwaves, heavy rainfall and intense tropical cyclones.

She stressed the importance of robust climate monitoring and early warning systems to support preparedness and informed decision-making.

“WMO’s state of the climate monitoring, based on collaborative and scientifically rigorous global data collection, is more important than ever before because we need to ensure that Earth information is authoritative, accessible and actionable for all,” she said.

The report also highlighted persistent ocean warming, with a separate scientific study showing that ocean heat content in 2025 remained among the highest on record. About 90 per cent of excess heat from global warming is absorbed by the oceans, underscoring their critical role in the climate system.

WMO said full details on climate indicators, including greenhouse gases, sea-level rise, glaciers and sea ice, will be published in its State of the Global Climate 2025 report, scheduled for release in March 2026.
