The Kano State Chapter of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) says it is committed to deepening and fortifying existing unity in the party ahead of 2027 elections.
The State Party Chairman Ali Shettima made the commitment in Kano during a meeting with stakeholders against the background that the party was facing mass defection.
Shettima said the meeting was necessary to clear misconceptions on the defection of the 2023 Governorship Candidate Bala Gwagwarwa to the All Progressives Congress (APC) along with other members adding that those who defected were already expelled members of the SDP hence not a defection.
“Those who defected were since expelled from SDP in view of their poor contributions to the growth of the party.”
“We want to tell the world that the party remains intact in the state. Only the governorship candidate left and that means nothing to us” Shettima said.
He further refuted allegations that local government and ward chairmen had also defected, emphasizing that party officials across all levels remain loyal to the party.
“As you have seen, our party executives, including the Director-General of his campaign are still with us. The claims that they all left with him are false. He left alone, accompanied only by the Vice Presidential candidate,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Kano SDP leadership officially welcomed new members into its fold, including the former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and Major Hamza Al-Mustapha.
The party described their entry as a boost, reaffirming its determination to strengthening its structure ahead future political engagements.
Others who spoke during the engagement expressed confidence of the party to win the Kano state governorship and Presidential elections come 2027.
