The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations says 75% of the world’s land has been transformed mostly for agriculture, with 23% of the land being no longer productive.

The FAO attributed this lack of productivity to desertification, land degradation and drought which, according to the organization, have impacted millions of people and their livelihood around the world.

“We have the means to restore degraded land and manage risks posed by drought and desertification.

“FAO supports countries to manage risks proactively to safeguard livelihoods against disasters and impacts of climate change.

“Together we can restore the productivity of over 2 billion hectares of degraded land and improve the livelihoods of more than 1.3 billion people,” it said.

The FAO Agricultural Index System (ASIS) detects agricultural areas prone to dry spells and drought through satellite data and a sophisticated data visualization tool to strengthen early warning systems and build resilience.
