The Media Network for Women in Peacebuilding in Gombe State has urged governments, civil society organizations, and individuals to advocate for policies that promote peace, justice, and human rights.
Speaking at a press conference in Gombe to commemorate International Peace Day, the network’s Coordinator, Mr. Alhassan Yahya, called on stakeholders to support Peacebuilding initiatives and conflict resolution efforts.
He emphasized the network’s commitment to the principles of the United Nations Charter, advocating for the protection of human dignity and the peaceful resolution of conflicts.
The Media Network also highlighted the need for collective action to address pressing global issues such as climate change, inequality, and social justice, factors they noted as serious threats to global peace.
The organization stressed the importance of inclusive, respectful dialogue to resolve conflicts and foster mutual understanding.
Although International Peace Day is officially observed on September 21, the Media Network chose to mark the event later in the month.
Mr. Yahya, represented by the network’s Deputy Coordinator, Mrs. Comfort Mukollo, explained that celebrating the day was vital to promoting peace, non-violence, and cooperation.
Mrs. Mukollo also underscored the theme of the 2024 edition, “Building Lasting Peace Through Dialogue and Cooperation.”
She pointed out that this theme emphasizes the importance of dialogue and collaboration in tackling conflict and ensuring sustainable peace.
The organization further encouraged the participation of young people in Peacebuilding efforts, recognizing their critical role in fostering peace.
Overall, the Media Network reaffirmed its commitment to peace, unity, and cooperation, stressing that collaboration among people is key to building a just, equitable, and peaceful world.
In her speech, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women Affairs, Mrs. Sa’adatu Bome Ishaya, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner, Ms. Asma’u Iganus, linked the current security challenges to the lack of peace.
She stressed that peace begins within individuals, stating, “Peace starts in our minds and within ourselves, and only then can we spread it to others.”
Mrs. Ishaya commended UN Women for establishing a sustainable Peacebuilding structure through the Media Network, which continues to benefit from the training provided during a past project in the state.
