No fewer than 3,700 senior secondary school students have commenced the Monitoring of Learners Achievement (MLA) examination, organised by the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC).
The Executive Secretary of NSSEC, Dr. Iyela Ajayi, announced the commencement of the nationwide exercise in Kaduna.
Represented by Fatima Bappare, NSSEC’s Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Dr. Ajayi explained that the MLA examination is conducted annually to assess students’ proficiency in mathematics and English language.
He said that the MLA was a tool to evaluate the achievement of learners through a series of assessments and provide an insight into the strengths and weaknesses of an educational system.
“The exercise will cover 3,700 learners in SS2 and SS3 in the 36 states and FCT. They include 100 learners, 50 from SS2 and 50 from SS3, who will be assessed in each state of the federation,” he said.
Approximately 25 public and private schools participated in the exercise, including institutions such as Government Secondary School Kawo, Uncle Bado Memorial College, and Abdulrazak Academy.
Dr. Ajayi highlighted the critical role of Mathematics and English Language in academic progression and life skills development.

He emphasised that Mathematics and English language were not only required for academic progression, but were also fundamental skills that learners would continue to apply in all areas of life.
He explained that Mathematics aids logical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills, while English Language enables effective communication, comprehension, and access to information.
In recent years, NSSEC has focused on training and retraining teachers to improve instructional methods in these core subjects.
Ajayi said the MLA helps the commission to identify learning gaps, evaluate the effectiveness of teaching strategies, and adapt to meet the changing needs of students.
He expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their support in ensuring the smooth conduct of the examination, which underscores the government’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s education system.
