3MTT Initiative: Nigeria Launches DeepTech_Ready Upskilling Programme
In a significant move to advance digital skills and technological innovation, the Federal Government of Nigeria has launched the DeepTech_Ready Upskilling Programme under the 3million Technical Talent (3MTT) Initiative.
This programme is designed to equip 20,000 young Nigerians with in-demand technical expertise in data science, artificial intelligence (AI), and other emerging fields, positioning Nigeria as a leader in digital skills development.

The DeepTech_Ready Upskilling Programme aims to deepen the impact of the 3MTT Initiative, an ambitious project spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to build a robust pipeline of skilled professionals across various technology sectors. By providing targeted training in cutting-edge fields, the initiative seeks to address Nigeria’s digital skills gap and create a globally competitive workforce.
Participants in the programme will receive specialised training in the following areas:
- Advanced Data Analysis and Visualisation
- Data Science and Machine Learning
- Data Architecture
- Geospatial Data Science
- Computer Vision
- Natural Language Processing
- Advanced Machine Learning Techniques
The programme spans six months per cohort, combining self-paced online learning with structured mentorship, in-person workshops, and interactive learning sessions. Participants will be supported by experienced industry professionals, ensuring they gain practical, hands-on experience in AI and data science applications.
The DeepTech_Ready Upskilling Programme is backed by a ₦2.8 billion grant from Google.org, reinforcing the strong collaboration between the Nigerian government and global tech leaders. The training will be facilitated by Data Science Nigeria (DSN), an organisation with a proven track record of developing AI talent in Africa. This partnership highlights the commitment to fostering a dynamic AI ecosystem in Nigeria.

Application and Eligibility
The programme is open to 3MTT fellows and individuals with basic to intermediate knowledge in technical fields relevant to AI and data science. Interested candidates can apply through the official 3MTT portal at 3mtt.nitda.gov.ng.
Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy emphasised that the DeepTech_Ready Upskilling Programme represents a crucial step in Nigeria’s mission to become a hub for digital skills and innovation.
“This initiative is part of our broader strategy to strengthen the @3MTTNigeria programme and ensure Nigeria’s youth are well-equipped to compete in the global tech industry. The world is shifting towards AI-driven economies, and we want Nigeria to be at the forefront of this transformation,” the Minister stated.
A recent research study conducted in 2025 showed that 73% of users saved two to three hours daily using AI-driven solutions, with a 90% recommendation rate for the effectiveness of such upskilling programmes. The DeepTech_Ready initiative builds on this momentum by ensuring participants are ready to apply their skills in real-world scenarios.
With its robust training framework, strategic funding, and focus on AI and data science, the DeepTech_Ready Upskilling Programme is set to play a pivotal role in Nigeria’s digital transformation journey.
