The Super Falcons of Nigeria thrashed Cape Verde 5-0 in the first leg of their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final round qualifying fixture on Thursday, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
Nigeria’s Gift Monday rocked the bar from a 22-yard free-kick in the 4th minute, before Kanu benefitted from a goalmouth scramble to slot past goalkeeper Jacinta Rodrigues.
Monday was instrumental again as she found the net from another goalmouth scramble in the 25th minute to extend Nigeria’s lead. Kanu made it 3-0 before the halftime break, making no mistake from a pass from Toni Payne on a swift counter-attack launched by Ajibade.
In the second half, the Falcons again completely dominated as substitute Esther Okoronkwo scored a brace, ensuring the nine-time African champions a comfortable lead in the two-legged fixture.

In the second leg, the Super Falcons will be looking to seal a place in the WAFCON finals, scheduled to hold in Morocco in the summer of 2024.
Both teams will clash in the second leg in Praia, the capital of Cape Verde on December 5th, 2023.
