Gombe Government Promises to Investigate Shooting of Tanker Driver

The Gombe State Government has appealed to the resident of the state to remain calm, as the government, in collaboration with security agencies and other stakeholders are working to ensure law and order, following a misunderstanding at a police checkpoint, which led to the shooting of a Tanker Driver by a police officer.

 

The incident took place along Dukku-Darazo Road, at about 6:30 am on the 17th of January.

 

The Gombe State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Julius Ishaya, told journalists that the government swung into action with the Gombe State Police Command, arrested the suspected police officer; Mr. Urbanus Ishaku, who was now undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department, CID.

 

Mr. Ishaya said the government had rallied all stakeholders to the scene, which was blocked for some time but cleared for use by other commuters.

 

“Government rallied all the people responsible to the scene, both security agencies and other organisations like the Tanker Drivers Association and others to bring the situation under control so, as I speak now, the road has been cleared, commuters can use the road now, the matter has been settled and normalcy has returned to the scene,” said Mr. Ishaya.

 

The Police Command in Gombe State said investigations were ongoing and disciplinary actions would be taken against the police inspector.

 

Unfortunate incidence

A statement by the Police Commissioner, Mr. Ishola B. Babaita, said the unfortunate incident happened at Gombe-Abba Police nipping-point, along Dukku-Darazo Road, while the officer was conducting stop and search, along with others.

 

The statement said Inspector Ishaku, who was attached to 34 PMF Gombe, shot the trailer driver, an indigene of Bauchi State, Mr. Abdullahi Bello, on his buttock and sustained injury.

 

The command, however, said the victim was rushed to Federal Teaching Hospital, now in a stable condition Gombe, where he is currently receiving treatment.

 

Remain calm

Consequently, the Commissioner of Police enjoined the citizens of Gombe State to remain calm, while giving the assurances that the Police would not tolerate any act of indiscipline from any Police Officer.

 

“Any Policeman caught in reckless use of his firearm will be dealt with decisively in accordance with the law please,” the statement said.

 

In the same vein, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Ethical Orientation, Mr. Adamu Dishi Kupto, commended the cordial relations between the security agencies in the state, which has raised the ranking of the state to become the best in the Ease of Doing Business, and provided an environment conducive for all.
