The Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mallam Mele Kolo Kyari,  has called for sustained collaboration with the Academia and Industry Experts to drive innovation in the energy sector.

He made the call while delivering a lecture titled, “Navigating Energy Transition & the Imperatives of University-Industry Collaboration” at the 1st Quarter 2021 Public Lecture Series organized by the Usmanu DanFodiyo University, Sokoto State, Northern Nigeria.

Kyari said that scientific development and advancement in technology have over the years shaped the dominance of oil as primary energy source and as a game changer in the progress of human society.

“The Oil and Gas Industry alone cannot drive substantial innovation without sustained collaboration with universities, research institutes, manufacturers, policy makers and regulators.

“NNPC welcomes beneficial relationship with the Academia and Industry Experts, who demonstrate capacity for productive research and innovation in the energy sector.

“…As global energy consumption grows from 2018 levels by about 50% by 2050, it is apparent that oil and gas will continue to be a crucial component of the world’s future energy.

“Global transition to renewable energy will definitely continue to gain momentum, but the pace may not be fast enough to offset the impacts of worldwide economic expansion and population growth,”  Kyari said.

In attendance were the Sokoto State Governor, Rt. Hon. @AWTambuwal, Kebbi State Governor, Atiku Abubakar Bagudu (who also chaired the occasion) and the entire Usmanu DanFodiyo University community led by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Lawal Bilbis.
