Nigeria to host 2022 World Toilet Summit

Nigeria has been selected to host the World Toilet Summit, for the year 2022.

This shows the country’s progress towards eliminating open defecation practices in the country through the implementation of a National Campaign to end Open Defecation in the country by 2025, tagged ‘Clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet.

To have a successful conference, the Minister of Water Resources, Mr. Suleiman Adamu inaugurated a Planning Committee for the hosting of the 2022 World Toilet Summit in Nigeria.

He explained that the Summit which holds on an annual basis alongside the World Toilet Day Commemoration, recognizes the need for raising awareness on the global sanitation crisis.

“The Federal government has consistently demonstrated commitment to the Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector in Nigeria through the various initiatives being implemented in the sector which includes the Presidential declaration of the State of Emergency in the sector, Adamu  said.

According to the Minister, “the National Action Plan is to revitalize the sector, the partnership for expanded WASH (PEWASH) to ‘clean Nigeria use the Toilet’ campaign the sustainable Urban and Rural project (SURWASH) among others.

“The 2022 World Toilet Summit is expected to bring together government Actors, private sector players, development partners, NGOs and other sector stakeholders to highlight the issue of Open Defecation and bring together public focus, he noted.

On his part, the Chairman of the Planning Committee who is also the Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Didi Walson-Jack  pledged the Committee’s commitment to ensuring that Nigeria holds the best World Toilet Summit.

“To say we are highly honoured and been so selected from such a critical assignment, we want to pledge that we shall do all that we need to do to ensure that Nigeria hosts the summit in a manner that will bring pride to Nigeria and would also escalate the campaign clean Nigeria use the toilet,” Walson-Jack said.

The Committee is to commence its work immediately ahead of the World Toilet Summit billed for November 19, 2022.
