As part of activities to mark this year’s Workers Day which is globally commemorated on the 1st of May, the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC, has held what it called a National Rally to press home workers’ demands.

The procession took off from the Labour House Central Area Abuja down to the Federal Secretariat in company of officials of Federal Road Corps and other security agents to ensure a peaceful conduct of the rally.

Speaking at the event, the NLC President Mr Ayuba Wabba explained the motive behind the National Rally.

This rally is about raising the consciousness of the working class that May Day is set aside as International Workers’ day to recognize the contribution of workers to national development, economic stability and the creation of wealth because we said labour creates wealth but yet after  creating  the wealth, what have we achieved…and this is something that need to be interrogated at this May Day”

He expressed concern over the series of security challenges bedevilling the country as well as economic instability that workers are the worst hit and something need to be done to address it.

He highlighted the decision of the National Working Committee of the NLC after their meeting.

Every day people are killed in this country which is unacceptable and something very urgent needs to be done and the issue of ASUU strike is also in the front burner which drastic measures should be adopted to resolve the industrial crises  between  the Federal government and the University lecturers”

Mr  Wabba  said that the best way to reduce this social menace in the society is to provide education for Nigerian youths.

“the best way to address poverty is to give education to the children of the poor. They will find their level, they will not be manipulated  to go into terrorism, political thuggery and other criminal activities which brings set back to the development of Nigeria”

The theme of this year’s May Day is “ Labour, politics: the quest for good governance and National Development” which the NLC said  captures the  mood of the nation.
