Nigeria’s U17 women’s football team, the Flamingos, took a step toward qualifying for the FIFA U17 World Cup courtesy of Opeyemi Ajakaiye’s lone strike in a 1-0 first-leg away victory against Ethiopia, at the Abebe Bekila Stadium in Addis Ababa.

Both sides had failed to hit the target early in the game after a few chances. However, Ajakaiye struck in the 36th minute after she was put through on goal by midfielder Taiwo Afolabi. Ajakaiye took her goals tally to six in the ongoing FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup African qualifying series.

Ethiopia looked to find its way back into the game in the second half, but were met with a resilient Nigerian defence as the match finished 1-0 in favour of Nigeria.

Both teams will clash again at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on Saturday, 4th June, 2022. The winner on aggregate will qualify as one of Africa’s three representatives at this year’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup finals in India.
