Nigeria’s governing party, the All Progressives Congress, APC says it will scrutinise and pick its presidential flagbearer for the 2023 General Election based on the party’s guidelines.
The APC National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu stated this in an interview he had with journalists at the party’s headquarters.
The APC had earlier scheduled it’s screening for presidential aspirants for 23rd May, however the screening was postponed indefinitely. It has scheduled the presidential primary election to hold on 29th to 30th May.
While responding to question on if the Party will have a consensus arrangement to select its presidential candidate, the APC National Chairman said selecting a presidential flagbearer was a big deal that would not be taken lightly by the party.
He said the Party has 28 presidential aspirants from all over Nigeria that would be screened.
“The chairmanship seat is not the same as that of the tussle for the presidency of the country. You can’t even compare the two of them. That question (of consensus) does not arise.
“However the party has laid down it’s rules and regulations for the aspirants. We would scrutinize all of them based on our guidelines to be sure we pick the right candidate for the party.
“We have 28 aspirants for the presidential ticket and everybody knows that all of them cannot get the ticket. If it’s God wish they all can even be president of the country one after the other. Our is to ensure justice in the choice of who emerges candidate of the party. That does not mean we are perfect. But we pray we do the right thing” Adamu said.
He further advised delegates who would be attending the presidential primary to be careful about electing aspirants who share money to them to win their votes, stating that such aspirants “can’t be the right candidate of the party, he doesn’t mean well for the country”.
