The SASAKAWA Africa Association (SAA), an international agricultural development Non-Governmental Organization, has urged Nigeria to adopt a more digital approach to agricultural practices, if the country seeks to address its food insecurity issues.

The President of SASAKAWA Africa Association (SAA), an expert and stakeholder in the agricultural sector, Makoto Kitanaka, stated this in a chat with journalists in Abuja, pointing out that there were many farmers’ groups in Nigeria that lack digitalization.

Kitanaka explained that digitalizing agriculture will enhance farmers’ yield and move them out of poverty.

According to him, his organization has built the capacity of over eight million smallholder farmers and over 20 million value chain actors in maize, soya beans, rice, wheat, tomato, sorghum, and millet, both directly and indirectly.

“There are so many farmers’ groups in Nigeria that still lack digitalization.

“We would like to introduce our new technology to facilitate the vision of the farmers.

“There is a lot of information in the market, and the focus is that farmers should always know the real information in agriculture,” he said.

The Sasakawa Africa Association, a Non-Governmental Organization registered in Geneva, Switzerland, administers and manages Sasakawa Global 2000, a programme to bring about food security in sub-Saharan Africa.

The association’s other activities include teaching agroprocessing in Africa, to increase the economic viability of the Sasakawa Global 2000 program and improve the links between Africa’s farms and urban areas.
