National Broadcasting Commission urges Journalists to imbibe code of conduct

The National Broadcasting Commission of Nigeria has called on all Media practitioners to be guided by the code of conduct governing the Profession so as to ensure accurate, fairness and balance in their reportage.

The Commission also urged all Media practitioners to be sensitive in reporting conflict in order to mitigate crisis in the society.

The Zonal Director of the commission, Kaduna state , North Central Nigeria, Jamilu Yahaya Jega stated this during a  two day workshop on conflict-sensitive reporting organized by Mercy Corps,  in collaboration with interfaith mediation centre at the Nigeria Union of Journalists  Secretariat in Kaduna.

Yahaya  stated that due to the volatility of the political terrain, journalists must refrain from further escalating tension . He also stressed that NBC will not  hesitate to fine any erring media house.

He went on to say that, the over all aim of Broadcasting is to ensure public safety, by giving authentic information on evacuation and relief in crisis situations.

In her address, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Kaduna state chapter, Asmau Yawo Halilu said the nature of the journalism profession requires frequent training in order to meet up with the twenty first Century requirements of the practice.

One of the resources persons,  an online journalist, Mmayen Etim, called on the media to practise the art of reportage to calm tension and promote unity.

According to her, every journalists must meet the basic requirements to compete as a journalist, and urged them to encourage censorship so as to minimizes fake information by bloggers which sometimes lead to violence.

Participants drawn from various Media Organizations in the state expressed gratitude for the opportunity given and promised to make  proper use of the knowledge acquired at the workshop.
