Ahead of Elections of the Nigerian Bar Association NBA, three outstanding members of the Association, will slug it out to decide who leads the Bar at the expiration of the tenure of the current President of the association, Mr. Olumide Akpata, in August.
They are, Mr. Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN, Yakubu Maikyau, SAN and Jonathan Taidi.
The Association since its establishment in 1933 as an umbrella professional body of all lawyers in Nigeria, has engaged in the promotion and protection of human rights, the rule of law and good governance in the country.
At an election debate held in Abuja Nigeria’s Capital, the Association assured Aspirants and members of free, fair and technological-based election of its executives come July 16.
Chairman of the Electoral Committee of the NBA Mr. Ayodele Akintunde, SAN, gave the assurance during the 2022 Manifesto Day and the presidential debate organised for members vying for various positions in the association.
He said, “the electoral process is essentially based on technology because we are adopting e-voting.”
“And what we are trying to do is to let people know that it is possible for you to conduct free, fair and credible elections without controversy using technology.”
Mr Akintunde noted that every two years, there is an election in the Nigeria Bar Association and a change of leadership.
He said “this is the constitutional requirement in the association.”
“So the tenure of the current President, Olumide Akpata, is coming to an end this year by August.”
The three NBA Presidential contenders Mr Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN, Yakubu Maikyau, SAN and Jonathan Taidi, both promised improved welfare and good leadership during the debate.
The forthcoming NBA general election to elect the 36th President of the body, alongside 10 other national executives of the association, is slated for July 16, 2022.
Recall that the association had in 2016 adopted electronic voting in the election of its national officers, discarding the delegate system.
