The Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has called for assistance from the international community on providing security for Nigerian farmers, saying agriculture is gradually dying and food security is threatened in the country.

The Governor who made this call during his visit to the State Department, Washington DC, urged the United States of America and the rest of the international community to wade in to end the spate of violence in Nigeria, including Benue state, pointing out that farmers are under siege and are being decimated.

A statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Diaspora Affairs, Rev. Peter Ichull, revealed that the governor said he was at the State Department to seek support to end displacement of farmers which is increasing hunger and causing social services disruption among other things.

According to the statement, Ortom alerted the international community not to take the insecurity situation in Nigeria as a distant problem, noting that the outbreak of war in any country would cause migration problems to America and Britain due to their friendly immigration policies.

Also, the Governor pleaded support to fund the IDPs in Benue, Plateau, Kaduna, Niger, Zamfara and other states affected by terrorists’ attacks in Nigeria.
