ASUU Strike: Oyo NLC mobilises members for rally on Tuesday

The Oyo State branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), on Monday, expressed its readiness to hold a rally on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, in solidarity with the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The readiness, the Oyo NLC said, is in compliance with the directive of the NLC.

The Oyo State NLC secretary, Comrade Adebayo Aribatise, disclosed that the State Executive Council in session, civil society groups, as well as the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have been mobilised to participate in the protest.

Aribatise said all the affiliates of the congress have been directed to mobilise enough members to come out en-mass in support of the lecturers of the tertiary institutions that are on strike.

He noted that the protest, which would take off from the NLC State Secretariat, Labour House, American Quarters, Ibadan, would terminate at the Oyo State Secretariat, Agodi Ibadan, where Governor Seyi Makinde is expected to address the protesters.

Aribatise affirmed that adequate security measures had also been put in place to ensure the safety of lives and property while the protest lasted.

“The State Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Oyo State, addressed the State Executive Council in session, as well as civil society organisations and the leadership of Nigeria students. Based on the memo issued directing all state chapters to hold a mega rally in solidarity with tertiary institutions that are on strike, the Oyo State Council of NLC will be having the rally on Tuesday, 26th July 2022.”    

“In view of that, the NLC advises all affiliates of the congress to mobilise enough members to come out en-mass in support of the lecturers of tertiary institutions that are on strike. The rally will take off at the Secretariat of NLC by 7:30 am, pass through Agodi through to Total Garden and terminate at the Oyo State Secretariat where we expect the governor to address everybody,” Aribatise revealed.

The Oyo State NLC secretary said security agencies are fully involved and letters have been disbursed accordingly.
