Insecurity: APC National Chairman calls for additional security personnel
Aanya Igomu, Abuja
The Nigerian government needs to recruit more security personnel and change their tactics of fighting in order to efficiently address insecurity in Nigeria.
The National Chairman of the governing party in Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Abdullahi Adamu stated this in an interview with Voice of Nigeria.
He explained that Nigeria’s population is increasing and if the number of police is not increased to match the population it will be a problem in the society.
Senator Adamu added that it was also important for members of the society to report suspicious activities to security authorities.
“I admit with all sincerity that we have security challenges in the country, no doubt about it. It is not from want of action by government that we are in this situation today, government is doing all it can. Unfortunately there are people that tend to aid or tend to just sit down look at the problems. They see crimes being committed, they see movement of these terrorists, they say nothing, they don’t speak to anybody, it is only when the event, the misfortune of the terrorist strike and take place that they begin to shed crocodile tears but if everyone of us will see security as everybody’s business and when you see something you report it to the appropriate authorities. When you report you have absolved yourself of the responsibilities of the country. When you do nothing you are as good as the terrorists yourself because you are aiding and abating crime.
“The military men are not yet wanting, they are doing their best its just that the style of the terrorists keep changing because its a guerilla fight. The government just needs to increase the tempo and the number of security personnel” Senator Adamu said.
Also speaking on grazing which has been a root of insecurity in Nigeria, the APC National Chairman emphasised the need for the government to set up infrastructure for ranching before completely shutting down free-range open grazing.
He explained that the herders have rights just as other business owners and are entitled to necessary infrastructures for their business.
“The infrastructure must be in place for us to change this free ranging kind of grazing for animals to the controlled type where you have your animals in a place determined, they can graze in a place determined, they can have water in a place determined, they can have room to move in a place determined, when youare able to do that then ofncourse you begin to introduce restrictions of movement, but without that, you can operate in a vacuum.
“These animals have rights, the herders have rights. If the government will provide for all forms of business callings, they provide electricity, clinics, conducive environment, they provide toilets in the market for market men and women they provide security cover for people with various trades around the city, they owe the herders same duty” he said.
Senator Adamu stressed the need for lawmakers and leaders to create policies that propagate better production of food and protect local farmers adding that importation of food is a disservice to Nigeria.
