Former Military President of Nigeria General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, has called on Nigerians to be peaceful, confident and optimistic during the 2023 electioneering campaigns and elections in the Country.

The former Military President, who stated this during a discussion with the media in marking  Nigeria’s Independence anniversary in Niger State North Central Nigeria, urged the electorates to maintain peace and be focused on the conduct of the elections.

General Babangida further tasked the younger generation in the country on the need to imbibe the culture of knowing more about the historical perspective of Nigeria and the effort of its founding fathers in bringing the country together.

“Seven years after the independence we went through a civil war, and came out of it quite successfully, in the sense that the country remains one from 1967 to 1970, and since then all efforts, government both civil and the military were all engaged in trying to keep the country united, and so far we are still a united  country,” Gen. Ibrahim Babangida added.

He noted that the present government of Nigeria is willing to bring an end to the insecurity challenges bedeviling parts of the country and added that the operations require both the support of the public and the laws enforcement agencies .

Nigerians must support the law enforcement agencies in fighting the insurgency and once this is done the government is willing to fight the insurgency,” he stated.

ASUU Strike
On the ongoing ASUU strike in the country Babangida  said the lecturer’s strike was part of the challenges of governance, and the  government is willing to find a lasting solution to the menace,

To the  best of my knowledge lots of effort are being done by the government in finding solutions to the problems,

I know it will be found, it’s a question of time, as long  as  people are willing to talk and  engage themselves in trying to provide a solution, definitely a solution will come”.

Babangida who commended past and present leaders of Nigeria for their tremendous efforts to diversify the economy of the Country, noted that there has been a lot of good success ,”we just have no option but to continue diversifying the economy and making it open”.

What we did was that we  followed what the world was practising at that time, we belong to the comity of cations, in 1989 the whole world economy was changing and we can not be left out but rather joined the rest of the world in diversifying our economy.”
