The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ebonyi State, Southeast Nigeria said it is determined to curb road accident in the state through massive sensitisation on the need to drive safely as the festive season approaches.
The sensitisation was for the motorists to know the rules guiding usage of roads in order to save lives.
The FRSC Sector Commander in the State, Corps Commander Uche Chukwura while addressing Journalists during the awareness campaign at Spera- Indo Motor park in Abakaliki the State capital said all Motorists and other road users should always observe what is known as primary rules by the FRSC.
“Truly, those rules may actually look like it doesn’t matter by the motorists but the truth is that those Primary rules are the ones that can get the Corps officer highly offended. These rules include: making sure that your tyres are in order, head lights, wiper, signal lights amongst other things must be in order”
“Above all, you must have your Driver’s license”, Chukwura informed.
She called on all the motorists to avoid drinking alcohol and other dangerous substance if they must drive.
The State Commissioner for Business Development, Dr Steve Odoh who represented the Governor, David Umahi said FRSC should know that their primary assignment is to ensure that road accident is drastically reduced.
Dr Odoh thanked the FRSC for the wonderful work they are doing in the state.
“Ebonyi State Government has done very well in good road network in the State. These good roads are the reasons behind the reduction of road accident in the State”, Odoh said.
However, he called all the officers and men of the Corps to abide by the rule of their engagement and to avoid anything that can lead them to extort money from the motorists and other road users.
The State Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ in the State, Comrade Tony Nwizi promised that the Journalists and the road safety Corps are going to synergize to curb road accident through proper communication to the targeted audience.
“Mass media has major role to play because without channeling these our campaigns through appropriate media, the road safety Corps might not achieve the desired goals”, Nwizi added.
On his part, the State Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Union (NURTW), Comrade Anthony Ewa thanked the FRSC for their tireless efforts to reduce accident in the State.
Ewa called on all the motorists to always obey the rules of the FRSC.
